Resources for clinical research in the MGB Department of Anesthesiology are housed within the MGB Anesthesia Research Center which spans both Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The mission of this integrative center is to provide the infrastructure, coordination, and expertise needed to help investigators successfully design, launch, and manage research studies across all phases of the research lifecycle.
The ARC offers comprehensive research coordination support, including access to experienced study coordinators and project management resources for both clinical trials and observational studies. Investigators can also connect with biostatisticians and methodological experts through the ARC to strengthen study design and analytical approaches. Beyond these services, the center supports operational aspects of research, including study startup, participant recruitment strategies, and day-to-day execution.

Pre-award grant administrators in the MGB Department of Anesthesiology play a critical role in helping investigators prepare competitive, compliant, and well-structured grant applications before submission. Their work typically includes:
Budget development: Building detailed, accurate budgets and justifications that align with sponsor rules and institutional policies, including personnel effort, fringe benefits, indirect costs, and allowable expenses.
Application coordination: Managing timelines and internal deadlines, assembling all required components (biosketches, facilities documents, letters of support), and ensuring the full application package is complete.
Compliance review: Checking that proposals meet institutional, federal, and sponsor-specific requirements (e.g., human subjects, animal use, data sharing plans, conflict of interest disclosures).
Routing and approvals: Submitting proposals through internal systems for departmental and institutional approval prior to sponsor submission.
RPPR support: Pre-award grant administrators assist investigators with preparation and submission of Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs), including coordinating updates, ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements, and facilitating timely submission.
Liaison role: Serving as the primary point of contact between investigators and central research administration offices to ensure smooth communication and adherence to policies.
The department currently has three pre-award grant administrators (Catherine Fong, Heather Kearney, Myanh Ta) who are assigned based off bandwidth and expertise. As a result, multiple grant administrators may be assigned to work with a single PI for different applications. If you plan to submit a grant, please indicate your intention using the following link, which will assign one of pre-award team to assist: https://www.mgbanesthesiologyresearch.com/
For all other pre-award questions, please email AnesthesiologyPreAward@massgeneralbrigham.org.

Post-award grant administrators in the MGB Department of Anesthesiology provide essential support to ensure that funded projects are managed effectively, remain compliant, and stay on track financially throughout the award lifecycle. Their responsibilities include:
Financial management and monitoring: Overseeing grant budgets, tracking expenditures, reconciling accounts, and ensuring spending aligns with sponsor and institutional guidelines.
Effort and payroll coordination: Managing salary allocations (CAPAS transactions) to ensure accurate reporting of personnel time on grants.
Compliance and policy adherence: Ensuring that all post-award activities meet sponsor regulations, institutional policies, and audit requirements.
Reporting support: Assisting with financial reports, progress reports, and closeout documentation required by sponsors.
Award setup and maintenance: Facilitating account setup, managing modifications (e.g., no-cost extensions, rebudgeting), and maintaining accurate grant records.
Subaward management: Overseeing subrecipient agreements, invoicing, and monitoring compliance of collaborating institutions.
Closeout processes: Coordinating final financial reconciliation and ensuring all deliverables are submitted at the end of the project period.
